Texas Between 1900 and 1968, the legislature found 6 things that represent the Lone Star State best.

Interestingly, to this date, the nickname - "Lone Star State" has never been officially adopted and is listed as a symbol because of tradition. The original list of symbols are:

Symbol Type Official Symbol Year
Flower Bluebonnet, LUPINUS SUBCARNOSUS 1901
Tree Pecan 1919
Bird Mockingbird 1927
Song "Texas, Our Texas" 1929
Motto "Friendship" 1930
Flower Song "BlueBonnets" 1933

In 1969, the lawmakers in Texas decide that we needed at least 50% more symbols  to represent our great state:

Epic Poem Legend of Old Stone Ranch 1969
Gem Texas Blue Topaz 1969
Stone Petrified Palmwood 1969

This opened the gate to every sentimental legislator and private interest in the state.  In the following four decades, 40 more changes were made to the list, beginning with expanding the flower to include all bluebonnets and rounding out with an official 10k race.  Here is the rest of their handiwork:
