Texas Between 1900 and 1968, the legislature found 6 things that represent the Lone Star State best.
Interestingly, to this date, the nickname - "Lone Star State" has never been officially adopted and is listed as a symbol because of tradition. The original list of symbols are:

In 1969, the lawmakers in Texas decide that we needed at least 50% more symbols to represent our great state:

This opened the gate to every sentimental legislator and private interest in the state. In the following four decades, 40 more changes were made to the list, beginning with expanding the flower to include all bluebonnets and rounding out with an official 10k race.
